Larry started trumpet in 1978. In 1982 he began studying with Vincent DiMartino as a high school junior. He continued with Vince in 1984 at the University of Kentucky. A world-renown musician, Vince is now a life-long friend, colleague, and provider of continuous inspiration.
Other major teachers include Marvin Perry, Dan Gosling, George Weimer, Roger Ingram, and Bobby Shew, world-class musicians who have been invaluable influences, providing encouragement and solid musical advice and experience.
After leaving college early in 1987 Larry enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served as an Administration Specialist at Headquarters USAF at the Pentagon. Wanting to finish his undergraduate degree, he left the military with the USAF Achievement Medal and an Honorable Discharge.
Settling in Indiana, he finished his Bachelor of Science degree in K-12 All Area Music Education at the University of Indianapolis. He later earned a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance degree from Butler University.
Since arriving in Indiana in 1990 he established himself as a top-tier utility trumpet player working with the Indianapolis Symphony, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, South Bend Symphony, and the Evansville Philharmonic. Larry currently serves as Principal Trumpet with the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra (2003), the Marion Philharmonic Orchestra (2008), the Anderson Symphony Orchestra (2012), and the Muncie Symphony Orchestra (2019).
In 2007 he began teaching at the University of Indianapolis as Adjunct Professor of Trumpet. There, he teaches applied trumpet, brass masterclass, coaches the UIndy Trumpet Ensemble, and performs with the UIndy Faculty Brass.
In 2019 Larry was invited to be a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville while ITG President Cathy Leach was on sabbatical. There, he taught the undergraduate and graduate students, and the solo class.
He also chairs the Indiana chapter of the International Trumpet Guild Conference. He organized and hosted the 2017, 2018, and 2019 Indiana Trumpet Guild/University of Indianapolis Trumpet Conferences. His guest artists and clinicians have included Doc Severinsen, Rex Richardson, Ronald Romm, Aaron Romm, Scott Belck, Rob Parton, and Conrad Jones.
He is the creator and host of the studioHFL podcast. The podcast features interviews with legendary musicians and legends in the making. Music legends such as Ronald Romm, Doc Severinsen, Rex Richardson, Sergei Nakariakov, and Ryan Anthony are just a few of the hundred-plus terrific guests.
He has performed with artists including Wayne Newton, Sandy Patti, Bill & Gloria Gaither, Leann Rimes, Twila Paris, James Galway, Andre Watts, STYX, the Beach Boys, Allen Vizzutti, Amy Grant, Ronnie Milsap, Peter Frampton, Mannheim Steamroller, Linda Eder, Byron Stripling, and many others. He has also performed under the batons of esteemed conductors such as Raymond Leppard, Mario Venzago, Jack Everly, Larry Rachleff, and Eric Kunzel.
