A proud performing artist for both the S.E. Shires, & Eastman Music Company, Larry has been the Adjunct Professor of Trumpet at the University of Indianapolis since 2007. There, he teaches applied trumpet, brass masterclass, coaches student brass groups, and performs with the UIndy Faculty Brass, and chairs the Indiana International Trumpet Guild Conference.
Most recently he taught as Visiting Lecturer at the University of Tennessee while ITG President Cathy Leach was on leave for the 2nd semester of the 19-20 school year. Along with her undergraduate and graduate students he taught the combined solo class.
He has organized and hosted the 2017, 2018, and 2019 Indiana Trumpet Guild/University of Indianapolis Trumpet Conferences. Guest artists and clinicians have included Doc Severinsen, Rex Richardson, Ronald Romm, Aaron Romm, Scott Belck, Rob Parton, Conrad Jones, and others.
He is the host of the podcast studioHFL which features interviews with legendary musicians and legends in the making. Interviews with legends such as Ronald Romm, Doc Severinsen, Rex Richardson, Vincent DiMartino, and Ryan Anthony are just a few of the many terrific guests on the podcast.
Larry first studied trumpet with the world-renown Vincent Dimartino in 1982. Starting as a high school junior and then at the University of Kentucky. Vince inspired him in the early 80’s and continues to inspire now, as a trumpet player, educator, colleague, and friend.
In 1987 Larry enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served as an Administration Specialist at Headquarters USAF at the Pentagon. Following his enlistment, with the USAF Achievement Medal and an Honorable Discharge, Larry left to resume his undergraduate studies at the University of Indianapolis were he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in K-12 All Area Music Education. He later earned a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance degree from Butler University.
Since arriving in Indiana, Larry started Powell Music, a musician contracting company and he has established himself as a top-tier utility trumpet player. As an orchestral musician Larry serves as:

He also owns and manages Powell Music, a company that contracts musicians for events of all types. He is also busy as a session player in the recording studios in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. When not gigging on land, he works on ships for Carnival UK on Cunard lines and P&O lines as lead trumpet in the showbands.
Major instructors and influences have been Vincent DiMartino, Marvin ‘Chappy’ Perry, Bob Wood, Dan Gosling (the Chopsaver guy), Jared Rodin, George Weimer, and Roger Ingram, world-class musicians who have been invaluable teachers and audition coaches since the early ‘90’s, providing encouragement and solid musical advice and experience.
He has performed with artists including Wayne Newton, Sandy Patti, Bill & Gloria Gaither, Leann Rimes, Twila Paris, James Galway, Andre Watts, STYX, the Beach Boys, Allen Vizzutti, Amy Grant, Ronnie Milsap, Peter Frampton, Mannheim Steamroller, Linda Eder, Byron Stripling, and many others. He has also performed under the batons of esteemed conductors such as Raymond Leppard, Mario Venzago, Jack Everly, Larry Rachleff, and Eric Kunzel
