Larry Powell - Short Biography
Larry Powell is the founding member and trumpeter with The Forge, a professional touring ensemble dedicated to performing the great works of artists of all generations. The Forge’s current project, Classic Rock/Epic Tunes Recast In Brass, showcases the music of artists including Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, and many others from the era of Classic Rock.
He serves as Principal Trumpet with three exceptional regional orchestras; Owensboro Symphony (KY), Marion Philharmonic (IN), and the Anderson Symphony (IN), and is busy as a session player in the recording studios in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. When not gigging on land, Larry is busy working as an emergency fill-in for Cunard, and P&O cruise ships as lead trumpet in the showbands.
Larry is also on the brass faculty at the University of Indianapolis where he teaches applied trumpet, leads student groups such as the UIndy Brass Quintet, and the UIndy Trumpet Ensemble. He also organizes and performs with the UIndy Faculty Brass Quintet.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Indianapolis in K-12 All Area Music Education in 1993, and a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance degree from Butler University in 2001. Major instructors and influences have been Vincent DiMartino, Larry’s first teacher while at the University of Kentucky, who inspired in the early ‘80’s, and continues to inspire now, both as a trumpet player and an educator, colleague, and friend. Marvin Perry, Bob Wood, and Jared Rodin, three world-class musicians with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra have been invaluable teachers and audition coaches since the early ‘90’s, providing encouragement and solid musical advice and experience. Through masterclasses and private lessons, Roger Ingram, lead trumpeter with Harry Connick, Jr., has helped Larry reach new heights in his lead playing.
